BOISE - Police are searching for a man after a pursuit early this morning in Meridian.

Officers tried to pull the suspect over, but he took off. Police say the suspect fired shots from the vehicle at officers.

The chase wound through Meridian, ending up in the Walden Park neighborhood near Cloverdale and I-84.

That's where police say the suspect crashed his van into a parked car in the driveway of a home and took off on foot.

They blocked off the neighborhood while they looked for the suspect.

Later, police received word of a stolen truck from the same area - a 1997 red and silver Dodge Ram pickup with personalized license plates that read "HAMMUR."

Police say the suspect is Kirkley Allen Evans - a white male, 37 years old, 6 feet tall weighing 200 pounds. Evans has brown hair and brown eyes, and is considered armed and dangerous.

Police say they have another suspect in custody.

This is a photo of the truck stolen Thursday morning. Police say a suspect in a chase stole the vehicle from a home and took off.

Order delays new Idaho area code

BOISE -- Idaho residents will be able to hang onto that 208 area code a little longer.

The Federal Communications Commission has authorized the Idaho Public Utilities Commission to order a number pooling program.

The program is expected to extend the life of the 208 area code by making sure that all available phone numbers are used.

Telecommunication companies are generally issued blocks of 10,000 phone numbers. But state officials say not all providers use up all the numbers assigned to them -- leaving lots of numbers "stranded" but not in use.

In fact, the Idaho Public Utilities Commission says that only 42.2 percent of the numbers assigned to Idaho providers are in use.

The FCC agency that manages North America's area codes predicted that Idaho's area code will run out of telephone numbers in 2010. But state officials say the mandatory number pooling rule could delay that date.

Meridian Police Chief Bill Musser is retiring.

MERIDIAN -- Meridian Police Chief Bill Musser announced his retirement today after 24 years with the department.

Meridian Mayor Tammy de Weerd praised Musser’s years of service, noting his outstanding dedication to the Meridian community.

“Chief Musser’s long and distinguished career with the Meridian Police force is filled with significant accomplishments,” de Weerd said.  “The high caliber of our staff and the efficiency with which they operate is a testament to his leadership skills.”

Musser, upon returning from a week of leave, said he used that time to discuss with his family his need to address some health issues and his desire to pursue a career change.

He has dreamed of teaching and has been taking steps toward fulfilling that goal.

“I am close to completing a Master’s degree in Justice Administration and will use that degree and my experience to teach law enforcement at the college level,” said Musser.

Captain Jeff Lavey has been named interim chief of police and will oversee the department’s daily operations, management and administration. A national search will begin immediately to find a new police chief.

UPDATE: Red Alert as valley air worsens

BOISE - Shifting winds are causing a rapid deterioration of air quality over the Treasure Valley.

The Department of Environmental Quality issued an red air alert for Thursday and Friday – the fourth level on a scale of six steps.

Just two days ago, the air of the valley was significantly cleaner, with the air status at a rare for this year “green” status – the best level.  A change in the weather pattern switched the wind direction to funnel smoke from central Idaho fires down in to the valley.

The Air Quality Index hit 160 for today – and the DEQ warns the air is unhealthy for all individuals. The agency advises you to avoid excercising between noon and 7 p.m. during the alert. If you do choose to excercise outside, try to avoid busy streets.

As the sun rose this morning – it appeared a bright orange color.  The skies around the area are a murky brown, with the sun a diminished dot.  The skies are mostly clear of clouds – but the haze gives the area an overcast feeling.

As you might imagine, open outdoor burning is banned in Ada and Canyon counties until the air quality improves.
