BOISE - July 2007 made its way into the Treasure Valley record books for bad air and hot temperatures.

Tuesday wrapped up a month of triple digit heat and nearly two dozen bad air quality days.

The DEQ issued an air quality alert on 22 of the 31 days in July.

BOISE -- The high heat blanketing the state is shattering all kinds of records for electricity demand. That's the word today from Idaho Power.

The utility is reporting that usage last Friday reached an all-time high of 3,193 megawatts. It also marked the third time so far this summer that the record books have been rewritten.

The July 13th peak tops the mark set on July 6, which broke a record set the day before.

Power demands recorded on July 5th shattered the previous mark of 3,084 megawatts set on July 24, 2006.

Like past summers, company officials say the surge for power is intensifying in late afternoon when air conditioners and irrigation pumping loads coincide.

Officials also say they have had to buy power on wholesale markets because hydropower production has been in decline due to lower stream flows.

BOISE -- July has been a bad one for air quality in the Treasure Valley and experts say we've reached a new record - it's a dubious one.

We’ve already broken the record for the number of orange air quality alerts in one month.

And experts say there's no turning back as we are only a month into summer and barely into fire season.

Record highs on the thermometer also mean record-breaking pollution.

BOISE - With record-breaking heat on tap, the Department of Environmental Quality has issued a red alert for air quality in the Treasure Valley.

Forecasters expect the Air Quality Index to reach 155 – with very high levels of fine particulate matter.  The DEQ says smoke from area wildfires is settling into the Valley, causing the deteriorating air quality.

Hot temperatures are also a big factor – creating high levels of ozone.  The DEQ says everyone – not just sensitive groups – should consider holding off on strenuous outdoor activates until the air quality improves.

Outdoor burning is banned in Ada and Canyon County until the alert level comes down. The DEQ urges the usual precautions: limit driving, combine trips, don’t burn outside, and fill your gas tank or mow the lawn late in the evening.

The red alert is not the highest level – if the air quality index rises further, the alert could reach purple or maroon.  There’s no current indication that the air quality will further worsen.

Idaho Power Urges Conservation

BOISE -- The western heat wave that's driving the mercury into the 100s, combined with poor snowpack last winter, are conspiring to drive electricity prices through the roof.

Idaho Power, the state's largest utility, says it's trying to get its 450,000 customers to conserve energy -- especially during the hours between 4 and 8 p.m. -- because that's when demand is the greatest.

Customers are paying about 5.9 cents per kilowatt hour now, largely from the utility's hydropower dams.

But if Idaho Power has to go and buy power on the open market, it would cost about six times that amount.

If Idaho Power is forced to do that, the increased costs will be reflected in a price hike next year.

Spokeswoman Anne Alenskis says, "Not only does conservation help keep future rates down, it also cuts customers' individual bills."
