BOISE - With
record-breaking heat on tap, the Department of Environmental Quality
has issued a red alert for air quality in the Treasure Valley.
Forecasters expect the Air Quality Index to reach 155 with very high
levels of fine particulate matter. The DEQ says smoke from area
wildfires is settling into the Valley, causing the deteriorating air
quality.
Hot temperatures are also a big factor
creating high levels of ozone. The DEQ says everyone not just
sensitive groups should consider holding off on strenuous outdoor
activates until the air quality improves.
Outdoor burning
is banned in Ada and Canyon County until the alert level comes down.
The DEQ urges the usual precautions: limit driving, combine trips,
dont burn outside, and fill your gas tank or mow the lawn late in the
evening.
The red alert is not the highest level if the
air quality index rises further, the alert could reach purple or
maroon. Theres no current indication that the air quality will
further worsen.
